Basic knowledge of print formats will help you in ordering
prints.
What is a print format? Simply the photo's ratio of width
to height.
Digital cameras produce 2 basic print formats.
Standard Format - 4:3 ratio Wide Format - 3:2
ratio
(To complicate things even more, some newer digital cameras
have - 1:1, 5:4, 4:3, 3:2 and 16:9 photo formats.)
Most standard print and frame sizes are about a 5:4 ratio.

Standard Prints - Standard Format
- Wide Format

- some photo cropping for
digital photos.
Print sizes for standard off the shelf
frames.
For
"Standard Print
Sizes", all digital camera photos will require
some photo
cropping.
If you want a standard print size, we can
crop your photo to the
ordered size and send you a sample of the

Digital
Camera Full Frame Photo Sizes.
Print sizes for the entire photo right out of the
camera.

- Standard
Format Digital Camera Sizes - for no photo cropping
Applies to most
typical "point and shoot" compact digital cameras.
Generally, if you frame the shot with a view screen on
the back of the
camera instead of thru the viewfinder and lens,
you have this type
camera. Digital cameras with an image aspect ratio of 4:3.

- Wide
Format Digital Camera Sizes - for
no photo cropping
Applies to most
SLR digital cameras. These would be more advanced,
higher priced cameras where you frame the
shot thru the viewfinder
and lens. Digital cameras with an image aspect ratio
of 3:2.

WHAT
PRINT FORMAT IS YOUR DIGITAL PHOTO?
Simple method to find out. |
- Find the pixel
dimensions of your photo file or the photo
size in inches.
Look in image size of photo editing
application or right click
on photo properties.
Note the pixel or inches width and height
numbers.
- Divide the larger
number by the smaller number.
- A 1.33 means you
have a "Standard Format" digital photo
4:3 aspect ratio.
- A 1.5 means you
have a "Wide Format" digital photo
3:2 aspect ratio.
- Any other number
means the digital photo has been cropped,
is a different format or is a custom size.

you want your photo printed exactly as
it came from your digital camera, you
should order the correct format print
size.
You may want to crop or cut the print
yourself if placing in a standard frame
size purchased off the shelf.
